Our Presiding Elder
Mr. Robert L. Benton & Rev. Dr. Sandra K. BentonRev. Dr. Sandra K. Benton, Presiding Elder "Cheraw-Bennettsville District" Presiding Elder Benton accepted the "Call" in ministry August 1987 where she was a member of the Robinson A.M.E. Zion Church in Cheraw, S.C. The Rev. Dr. M.F. Harrington was the pastor. In December 1990, she was sent to Mt. Airy AMEZ Church in Chesterfield, SC, to supply this church as the Pastor. The following year she was appointed and served as the Pastor at Mt. Airy AMEZ Church for 4 years and 9 months. In November1995, Bishop George E. Battle appointed her to serve as the Pastor of the Greater Fair Plain A.M.E. Zion Church in McColl, S.C. God gave her the vision to build a new church building. The Membership voted, the majority agreed, and the work began the process of erecting a new church. In June 2001, this congregation moved into a new place of worship and the old church is being rented. To God be the Glory! She has also served as the Pastor of the following churches; Mt. Airy AMEZ Church in Chesterfield, SC from 1990-1995, Gt. Fair Plain AMEZ Church from 1995-2003; Supplied Mt. Hebron AMEZ Church in Cheraw, SC in 2005; Supplied Piney Grove AMEZ Church in Mt. Croghan, SC on two separate occasions; and Supplied Evans Metropolitan AMEZ Church in Bennettsville, SC. After serving each church, there were major improvements spiritually, physically, and financially. Just look at what God can do when you make yourself available. In November 2003, Bishop Joseph Johnson appointed Rev. Benton as the Presiding Elder of the Cheraw-Bennettsville District of the Pee Dee Conference, South Atlantic Episcopal District. She was the first female to be appointed as Presiding Elder in South Carolina in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She's served faithfully in this position for the past 10 years. There are a total 19 Churches under her charge located in Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, and Robeson Counties. Presiding Elder Benton served on the Board of Cheraw Housing Authority in Cheraw, SC; a member of the Cheraw's Chamber of Commerce; a member of the NAACP, the Cheraw-Bennettsville District is a Life Member of the NAACP, and the Negro Council of Women; a member of the Presiding Elder's Council of the A.M.E. Zion Church; She serves as the Chairperson for the Pee Dee Conference Trustees, Pee Dee Conference Finance Committee Chair, a member of the Pee Dee Conference Home Mission Committee, Holy Orders Committee, Faith & Order Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees for Clinton College; She's a graduate of Cheraw High School in Cheraw, SC. She's received certificates in Secretarial Science and Associates of Arts degree from Northeastern Technical College. She's a graduate of Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. where she majored in Psychology/Counseling. She attended Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, N.C. She's a recipient of a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. May 2012. Presiding Elder Benton is the daughter of Mr. Willie Parson, Sr. and the late Mrs. Luray Pegues Parson of Cheraw, S.C. She's the oldest of 4 siblings. She is married to Mr. Robert L. Benton. They are blessed with two children, Rev. Robert T. Benton (Melissa) and Mrs. Angel B. Coleman (Marcus). They are blessed with four wonderful grandchildren; Timel and Kenny Benton & Lauryn and Carter Coleman. Life is not always easy but if you seek God first and His righteousness, all other things will be added unto you. Work to leave a legacy that embodies a life of Christian service to God and man.
